Prof Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is the sixth President of the Republic of Indonesia and the first directly elected President in the country's democratic era. During his presidency, Dr Yudhoyono orchestrated what the World Economic Forum called "Indonesia's golden decade" from 2004 to 2014, which saw democratic development, political stability, robust economic expansion, conflict resolution and a strong international presence.

Under his guidance, the nation gained regional power and secured membership in the G20, and he assumed pivotal responsibilities in areas such as climate change adaptation and global geopolitics. Dr Yudhoyono shared his insights and experiences from his presidency and the challenges he had to overcome while governing Indonesia. The lecture was followed by a lively question-and-answer session.

  • Adaptability is key in a changing world. Anti-corruption efforts are essential for an open, tolerant, modern and democratic Indonesia.
  • Collaboration and global cooperation are central to forming security solutions, as demonstrated by the stronger cooperation between Indonesia-Singapore.
  • Economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection are three pillars of a greener economy that states should adopt.

There are three pillars of a greener economy: growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. I believe that all governments, presidents and prime ministers must really understand the importance of these three things, and adapt and apply them in their national agenda and policies.
