Challenges and Opportunities for Asian Research Universities
Dr Suh Nam Pyo
7 March 2008
Apart from advancing knowledge and generating outstanding graduates, research universities also fuel economic development for their region by creating new technologies and industries. As many Asian universities strive to become leading research universities, what are the country-specific and global issues that affect their success?
Dr Suh Nam Pyo, President of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) (2006-2013), discussed the challenges and opportunities facing a research university in the 21st century. He stressed the need to shift from imitation to innovation and spoke on the importance of risk-embracing research and stronger faculties.
-
The United States' lead in research is a result of long-term and concentrated funding in selected universities since the World War II era.
-
High success rates in research signal that the risks taken are too small. A culture of risk aversion is central to the problem in Asia.
-
Asian universities need increased funding, strong faculty, and a bold vision to compete globally, driving innovation and economic growth.
