Raising Cities

A Human-Centric Approach to Urban Development

With rapid urbanisation in cities, competition for resources, social tension and urban sprawl are issues that confront policymakers and urban dwellers in a climate-sensitive time.

So how can cities be shaped to balance social cohesion and urban development? How can cities charge electric vehicles sustainably? How does urbanisation affect migration and change family life?

With the launch of SMU’s Urban Institute, SMU seeks to advance a new organisational and intellectual paradigm for the study, understanding and advancement of uniquely Asian urbanism.

About The SMU Urban Institute

To address issues that come with urbanisation, the Singapore Management University (SMU) launched the SMU Urban Institute (UI) on 17 January 2024. The Institute will play a significant role in raising the University’s profile, and contribute thought leadership and innovative solutions to develop more inclusive, resilient and vibrant cities.

The institute is positioned as a university-level entity and draws on leadership across all SMU Schools. SMU hopes that the Institute will harness relevant disciplinary strengths, spanning areas such as urban geography, urban and behavioural economics, public policy, operations management and geospatial data analytics. They envision the Institute to be a research powerhouse dedicated to delivering impact through the study of Southeast Asian cities.
