SMU’S SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY
SMU SUSTAINABILITY BLUEPRINT
SMU aims to become a thought leader and solution partner in managing climate change contributing to sustainable city living, enhancing quality of life, and shaping the legal, regulatory, and financing frameworks to build healthier and happier societies.
The SMU Sustainability Blueprint identifies four pillars which cover the broad spectrum of how we work, learn and play as an Engaged City University.
A Closer Look at the SMU 2025 Sustainability Blueprint
SMU’s collective efforts across the four pillars will be mapped onto relevant Sustainable Development Goals developed by the United Nations, so that the University can contribute meaningfully to the larger global efforts.

Sustainable Resource Management
This addresses sustainability practices across the campus, including energy, water, procurement, work travel, and investment.
Develop Sustainability Leader Through Education
This encompasses embedding and integrating sustainability education across curricular and co-curricular programmes.
Develop Research Leadership in Sustainability
Leverage SMU’s strengths in management, governance, regulatory, finance, and societal perspectives.
Develop Resilient Communities
This addresses the well-being of students, staff, and faculty holistically by promoting a holistic approach towards the physical, mental and emotional well-being of students. staff and faculty.
Major Certifications and Standards
On its City Campus, SMU's green journey included improving energy and water efficiency as well as other initiatives which led to various Green Mark Certifications, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Singapore Standards {SS) namely:
- ISO 50001 Energy Management System Certification
- SS577: Water Efficiency Management System Certificate
- SS564: Green Data Centre Environmental and Energy Management System Certificate
- Green Mark Platinum Certification for its campus schools and buildings
- Green Mark Platinum Certification for Prinsep Street Residences
- Green Mark Platinum Certification for SMU Connexion (also an On-site Net Zero Energy Building)
- WELL Pre-certification for SMU Connexion - by International WELL Building Institute
With the four awards won at the BCA Awards 2019, SMU has achieved 100% Green Mark Platinum status for its entire campus.
